So this topic triggered my brain and got me thinking about the different options with regard to head porting, manual vs CNC, piston mods, different manufacturer options, pricing, etc.

I was looking at getting a ported head kit (36mm 4-bolt) from OBR (they have several options), they seem to have some very good runs on the board and are quite popular from what I have read and seen. Cost is quite affordable as well.

There are obviously other options and manufacturers out there, local and abroad. So let's hear some experiences and opinions on head porting options.

There are the EVO Tuning headkits. Highly regarded in Europe and the Elcon boys use them. $299 for a complete top end, CNC ported and hand finished cylinder, modded piston.

So these would be at the top end of the scale as far as cost and performance go Mike?

Being a head kit not a complete motor I wouldnt put them at the top but just below top, the complete high end motors are in the $1000+ category.

off road motors normaly are ported for more torque and onroads normaly for a bit more rpm, just check out all the top shelf european motor builders.

you will soon see 300 to 400 aud is not far off for a decent head and modded psiton combo and will perform much better then a 100 to 200 buck head.

the best way to go would be a complete motor with a matched ported crank case, you just got to think out side the box

i ran the esp 27.2 ts reed engine cost about 800 for the long block but holy crap it was one hell of an engine i had to take it out of my baja i just couldnt control it (but i am a little heavy on the throttle)
from what i have seen the esp and the onb heads are very similar and both put out some serious power .
but for me i port my own heads eye brows open the transfer ports etc but have never really noticed and real gain by piston porting the piston. i am in the process of building a new 27.2 ada for my mcd found a new cnc lightened piston im going to try and see if it gains anything at all.

Allthough its not ported im running a decked ESP head 27.2  it was a cheap option at the time but boy dose it go for a stock port. Decked heads are the way to go if you are useing a strocker crank as the decking maitains the correct prot spacing, wheres stacking gaskets raires the head and changes the porting.

I have heard that some peeps have had seazing problems with the EPS after about 5min running but I didnt have this issue, some of the other guys like O'Niels machine a small ammount off the top rim of the piston to prevent this problem.
