King Motor Baja wont start
« on: May 26, 2012, 07:16:06 PM »
Well after my 2nd outing with my Baja it wont start.

I remember while i was out at dirt bike track using it, towards the end when i was full throttling it i could hear the engine start to die then eventually stop. I wasnt able to re-start it and put it down to all the dust causing a fuel blockage.

Anyway after bringing it home, i :-

Changed the air filter
Checked to see if fuel was getting through.
Check to see if the spark plug was sparking.
Clean the spark plug with some wet and dry.
Ran through some steps on this forum about troubleshooting a non starter.

But still no success.
Im not even getting a single fire.

The only thing i haven't done is changed the plug (need to buy a couple of spares).

Can anyone think what might have caused it from working fine to stopping?
Could i have fouled up the a new plug after only two outings?
I don't know if the mixture setting would have been correct from the factory, but i read that after a while of using you might need to adjust them?

Any suggestions?

Also i noticed the plugs are not the same size as those used in whipper snippers or lawn mowers, anybody know any places in the shire i can pick on up from?

Thanks again

id say it definitely could be the plug, stock settings are pretty rich and definitely could of fouled the plug. try a new plug before spending money on anything else :)

If you have reset the carby to stock(1 1/2 on high and 1 1/4 turns out on the adjusting screws).
next thing check for spark and if it is not a strong spark change it.
if it still don't start it could be the diagram in the carby, either replace it or the carby.
does it have a kill switch?

Ive not made any changes to the car since taking it out of the box.
I was wondering about a weak spark but i couldn't find any information on how to determine if the spark is good or not?

There definitely appears to be fuel getting through as the plug will get wet after a few pulls.
It does have a kill switch and it did cross my mind that this could be at fault but i assume it would stop the plug from sparking when pressed and the plug definitely sparks.

I guess i will try and track down an open hobby shop tomorrow and swap out the plug first anyway.

you may of killed the Motor, does it still have the same compression as when you first got it? The KM motors loose there Ring tension quite easerly, simple fix is to fit a CY ring.

but yeah, check the spark plug spark and make sure the kill switch isnt at fault. Look around the base gasket for a Gasket Failure, easy way to tell is if the cylinder bolts came loose.

running in the sand at cronulla on the 22nd of this month kind of leans me towards a dusted motor.
pull the head off and have a look for scoring on the bore.

The compression seems ok, so i hope nothing this serious. I guess i should have taken it a bit easy for the first couple of tanks  :-[
Anyway, lets see once i get another plug fitted.

Any ideas where might be open on a Sunday?

Go to stock settings on your carby as mentioned by Victor before you use another plug, good chance it might just have fouled with richer break in settings but then it might've been lean also, You should always check the settings on the carb before running these things as most aren't right from the factory  . Hopefully it was richer rather than leaner.

If you're running in sand it will pay to do a few mods to keep the sand out of the places you don't want it, plenty of Info on here or you can ask an expert for some tips and that would be Kane (Klh mx10)  :D

There is a "H" and an "L" on the carb near the needles  ;)
